Federal BOP Release Meaning
The BOP Locator record explanation states that the locator covers federal records from 1982 forward and updates daily. A past Release Date paired with “Released” or no current BOP location supports departure from BOP custody. It does not certify that the person is free of every legal restriction or outside every other custodian.
A future Release Date is projected. “UNKNOWN” means the release term is not determined in the locator. First Step Act calculations can cause displayed dates to change or appear stale during recalculation. Record the retrieval date and use the current result. For a question about the precise computation, contact the institution or BOP records channel tied to the person rather than treating an old screenshot as final.
Search a Federal BOP Release
The BOP Inmate Locator supports identifier and name searches. The strongest method uses a BOP Register Number. It can also accept a DCDC, FBI, or INS number. A name search requires first and last name and can be narrowed with middle name, race, age, and sex. Compare the register number and demographic fields to prevent a same-name mismatch.
- Search the known BOP Register Number or another accepted federal identifier.
- If no number is known, use first and last name and add the available narrowing fields.
- Open or read the result fields for name, register number, age, race, sex, Release Date, and Location or status.
- Classify the date as past, future, or unknown. Do not convert a future date into completed release.
- Check the federal judgment or docket for sentence and supervision context.
- When the person was never committed to BOP, return to the USMS detention facility and federal court instead.
The Kanabec County current jail locator and Minnesota VINE do not search sentenced federal prisoners. Likewise, the MNDOC viewer covers state jurisdiction, not BOP.
Federal BOP Locator Fields
BOP results show a compact set of fields. Each answers a specific federal-prison question. The Release Date is the key historical or projected date, but its meaning depends on whether it lies in the past. Location or status helps separate a current institution from a released result. A register number is the best bridge to the correct federal record.
| BOP field | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Register Number | The unique BOP identifier used to match the federal record |
| Name and demographics | Identity checks that reduce same-name errors |
| Release Date, past | Supports departure from BOP custody on that date |
| Release Date, future | A projected federal date that can change |
| UNKNOWN | The locator does not have a determined release term |
| Location or status | Current BOP facility or released/no-current-custody context |
The locator is not a sentence-computation sheet and does not show every court condition. Read the judgment, later docket orders, and U.S. Probation information where relevant. A BOP release date should never be relabeled as a Kanabec jail release date.
Federal BOP Records Contact
No BOP facility was identified in Kanabec County, and the research does not support naming a specific federal prison for all people with a Kanabec connection. Federal designation can place a sentenced person elsewhere in the country. Start with the locator’s current institution when one is shown. Use the federal docket and BOP records process for a past release or disputed date.

Provide the register number, full name, date of birth, federal case number, and exact field or document sought. For records before 1982, BOP directs researchers toward the National Archives because its public locator begins with 1982 records. Privacy and law-enforcement limits may affect access to detailed files.
Note: A national system search should use the federal identifier whenever possible because a local place name may not appear in the result.
Kanabec to Federal BOP Custody
A person can move from Kanabec County Jail to USMS custody, then later to BOP after federal sentence. Each handoff produces a separate event. Kanabec Sheriff Records can address the local departure. The federal court and USMS address pretrial detention and delivery. BOP addresses sentenced incarceration and later release from BOP custody.
Do not skip the middle system. A Kanabec jail departure to a federal authority is not a BOP release. A contract detention booking may close when the person is transported for designation. BOP may take time to display the new prisoner. During a data gap, keep the conclusion limited to the verified handoff and check the official systems again.
The USMS contract detention page covers the pretrial network and why it has no public historical locator. This BOP route applies only after BOP actually receives the person or when a past BOP record is sought.
Federal BOP Release and Supervision
Federal supervised release is a court-ordered part of many federal sentences and is administered through U.S. Probation after prison. It is distinct from Minnesota supervised release and from Kanabec County probation. The BOP Locator’s past Release Date confirms the end of BOP custody, but it does not display all supervision duties or prove that the federal sentence has no remaining community term.
Use the federal judgment to determine whether supervised release was imposed. Later docket orders may address modification, revocation, or termination. Public access may not reveal every operational detail, and U.S. Probation is not a general public person-locator. A purpose-neutral verification should therefore state only what the public court and BOP sources establish.
- BOP release
- Departure from Federal Bureau of Prisons custody.
- Supervised release
- A federal court term served in the community after prison under U.S. Probation.
- Final sentence completion
- The end of all terms, which requires more than a BOP departure date alone.
Federal BOP Date Changes
A future BOP date can change after sentence recalculation, credit application, amended judgment, disciplinary action, or other authorized computation. BOP specifically warns that First Step Act recalculations may make a displayed date temporarily stale. A projected date should carry its retrieval date and never be promised as the actual day of departure.
When the date has passed but the record still shows a facility, retrieve the current result again and contact the institution. When the location is absent but the date is future or unknown, do not invent a release. The fields may be in transition or the person may be outside the public locator’s simple categories.
BOP’s daily update statement does not mean that every external court, USMS, or local jail system updates on the same schedule. Reconcile the systems instead of forcing their timestamps to match.
Federal BOP Release Boundaries
A past BOP Release Date can coexist with another form of custody. ICE may take custody after BOP. A state or county warrant may produce a local transfer. A federal court may require supervision. Each possibility needs its own affirmative record; none should be inferred solely from a released BOP result.
ICE’s Online Detainee Locator can cover current immigration detention and certain people released from ICE custody in the preceding 60 days. A state or local custodian uses its own roster and release record. The MNDOC viewer addresses Minnesota state jurisdiction. These systems do not merge into BOP’s result.
For a Kanabec inquiry, preserve the register number, court case, dates, and stated status. Then describe the conclusion precisely: released from BOP custody, still in BOP custody, or future/unknown date. That wording remains accurate even when another system must be checked next.
Federal BOP Historical Releases
The locator’s 1982 starting point matters for older federal cases. An absent pre-1982 person is outside the public locator’s stated record span, not proof that the person was never in federal prison. Use the National Archives route identified by BOP and the original federal court file. Older names and identifiers may also differ from current forms, so retain the register number whenever it is available.
For a post-1982 released result, save the exact name, register number, Release Date, location or status text, and retrieval date. Those fields create a clean citation to the BOP event. They still do not answer the later end of federal supervised release, which belongs to the judgment and court record.
